SINE2020: Project News A hello from the new Information Manager
My name is Lucy Moorcraft and I am SINE2020's new information manager. I was born and raised in the UK and I have a background in Chemistry (Msc and PhD). I have 15 years of experience in Science Communication gained in various roles including secondary school teaching, university marketing and recruitment and public engagement of science. I am based at FRMII/ MLZ in Garching, Germany. I love learning about all the exciting things that neutrons can be used for so make sure you tell me all about your new research and projects!
And a goodbye from the old one!
Dear Colleagues,
It’s time to say goodbye…
As some of you noticed already, I am leaving the project but not the neutron community. I took the chance to work as a press officer at the MLZ, better known as the FRM II in Garching and furthermore I will play my part within our common projects.
Thanks for the warm welcome and the great time within the last year!
And if you have any questions or comments, please ring the phone.
Best wishes to all,
Anke
Specialised European Neutron and Muon Schools – Call for Proposals!
Deadline 1st November 2018
As we start the last year of the project, funding from SINE2020 is available to support the organisation of Neutron and Muon Specialised Schools, as long as they are held before 30th September 2019. This will be the last call of the programme so read more to find out how to submit your proposal. Read more
REMINDER: New templates for SINE2020
Please remember that we updated the SINE2020 templates according to the requests from the European Commission so make sure that you all use these templates in future.
All European projects shall use the European emblem (flag) to acknowledge the support received under EU programmes AND be associated with the sentence:
This project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement No 654000.
You will find them on the web site
SINE2020: Industry Free measurements until April 2019
Our free feasibility studies offer for materials and component characterisation has been extended until April 2019. Find out how to apply!
SINE2020 at SNI2018
SNI 2018, the German Conference for Research with Synchrotron Radiation, Neutrons and Ion Beams at Large Facilities, has been held at MLZ in Garching near Munich, Germany with over 500 delegates participating. The SINE2020 community was well-represented in poster sessions and talks and of course our own stand, complete with Virtual Reality tour of the MLZ beam hall.
The SNI 2018 conference was organised by the Komitee Forschung mit Neutronen (KFN), Komitee Forschung mit Synchrotronstrahlung (KFS) and Komitee Forschung mit Sonden und Ionenstrahlen (KFSI), with a local organisation committee based at the Heinz Maier-Leibnitz Zentrum, and provided an opportunity for interdisciplinary networking and coverage of a wide range of topics.
The Komitee Forschung mit Neutronen (KFN) has just celebrated 30 years of fostering research with neutrons and have released a vivid insight into their work over the years. You are welcome to read it here (only available in German): 30 Jahre Komitee Forschung mit Neutronen: 1987-2017
New EARIV Brochure for Industry
European Analytical Research Infrastructures Village (EARIV) have released their brand new brochure for Industry. A joint initiative, led by a set of Horizon 2020 projects, EARIV allows industry to quickly and easily connect with relevant experts and engage with European large-scale analytical research infrastructures. You can download it here.
New case study: Bumax
Bumax have used Neutron Activation Analysis to gain precise elemental concentrations in the A4-grade stainless steel they use for their fasteners, designed for extreme environments. This will help them benchmark their methods to determine the elemental composition required in their raw materials.

From the world of neutrons: LENS Consortium signs Charter
As the BrightnESS project celebrated with its closing conference in June, now is the time to think about the next step. On 12 September 2018 in Vienna, Austria the League of advanced European Neutron Sources (LENS) signed their Charter to form a new strategic consortium of European neutron sources. This collaboration of 8 facilities in 7 nations hopes to strengthen neutron science in Europe. The countries involved are France, Germany, Hungary, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland and the United Kingdom.

Topping-out ceremony for new buildings at MLZ
The topping-out ceremony (Richtsfest) for two new buildings at the Heinz Maier-Leibnitz Zentrum (MLZ) in Garching, Germany was celebrated on 3rd September 2018 in truly Bavarian style with beer, speeches and the Richtskrone. The buildings will expand the research capabilities by providing an extra 4550 square meters of workshop, office and laboratory space. The buildings are a joint expansion between The Technische Universität München (TUM) and the Helmholtz-Zentrum Jülich.

Fastest 3D tomography images means a new world record
An ingenious rotary table, developed by a team at Helmholtz Zentrum Berlin (HZB), allows 3D tomographic images to be taken at a rate of 25 images per second – 5 more than previous technology allowed. The table was used on the EDDI beamline at BESSY II and, combined with particularly fast optics, was used to study pores in grains of metal during foaming processes.
