SINE2020 General Assembly 2019 in Bilbao, Spain
The final General Assembly for SINE2020 took place in Bilbao from 27th-29th May. Over 70 participants attended work package meetings, discussed the results and sustainability of the project and enjoyed plenty of tapas. Thank you to our hostst ESS-Bilbao!
You can read our report on the event here.
Celebrating SINE2020: The Road to the ESS
With only 3 months to go, we only have a few countries left on our journey through Europe on The Road to the ESS. Since our last newsletter we have visited Germany and Switzerland.
Read about BornAgain, high pressure sample environment and deuterated polymers. Stay tuned to The Road to the ESS.
Data Treatment's Workshop IV in Lund, Sweden
Work package 10: Data Treatment held their final Workshop IV in Lund, Sweden from 21st – 24th May. This workshop was one of the Key Performance Indicators for the SINE2020 project.
40 participants from all the SINE2020 partners involved in the work package enjoyed workshopping their latest improvements, great Swedish food and the opportunity of a site tour of the ESS, still being constructed.

Neutron Schools: Neutrons for Membrane Biophysics School and Matrac 2
Matrac 2
SINE2020 supported the Matrac 2 School 2019: Application of Neutrons and Synchrotron Radiation in Materials Science with Special Focus on Fundamental Aspects of Materials during the first week of April.
Read our report, and watch our video on the school here.
Neutrons for Membrane Biophysics School
Garching, Germany
PLEASE NOTE THE CHANGE OF DATE: 16-20 September 2019
The event will focus on the use of neutrons and molecular deuteration to enable early career researchers, mainly PhD students and postdoctoral fellows, to provide fresh insight into problems in membrane biophysics.
More information on the content, scope and logistical details can be found on their website.
Neutrons for the Biotech Industry Video!
SINE2020 held a successful Industry event in Zaragoza, Spain from 28th-29th March 2019. Now we have made a video to summarise it. You can read more about the event and find a link to the video here.
SYNERGI 2019 Report and Video
Our 2019 SYnchrotron and NEutron Research Go Industrial: SYNERGI event was held in Lyon, France on 1st April 2019. 45 participants from industry, synchroton and neutron facilities, academia and various other organisations attended.
You can read our report and watch the video here.
Neutrons allow analysis of polymer gels’ unusual attributes
Neutrons are good probes of materials like polymer gels, largely because of their sensitivity to hydrogen and its isotope, deuterium. Using a unique technique known as contrast matching, researchers replaced some of the hydrogen atoms in the gel with deuterium, which allowed specific structural components to be highlighted by the neutrons.

Bad times for truffle counterfeiters: Neutrons detect trace elements in popular edible mushrooms
Here, the samples are irradiated with cold neutrons. Following the neutron capture, the atomic nuclei of the chemical elements emit characteristic gamma rays.
